At the afternoon, August 19, Zhu Baofeng, the Deputy Director of BMSTC had an interview with an American delegation headed by Dr. Ken Chien, the academician with American Academy of Sciences, also the Director of the Molecular Medical Research Institute, the Great San Diego University Medical College, CA, U.S., and the Honorable President of American Heart Association.
Dr. Ken Chien enjoys extraordinarily high reputation worldwide in the field of cardiovascular research and has profound accomplishments in the academic circle. He also acts as the Technology Policy Consultant for many governments and consultant for pharmaceutical enterprises. Peking University Cardiovascular Research Institute wishes to avail itself of the reputation of Dr. Ken Chien in international medical community to launch collaboration with high-level medical research institutes for purpose of defeating the No. 1 killer facing Chinese people- the cardiovascular disease. The Beijing-California Molecular Medical Center on plan is intended to leverage the state-of-the-art technologies to educate medical personnel and practitioners via the application of new diagnostic approaches and innovative techniques, eventually to build a world-class specialized medical team in China and establish a state-level leading research center.
Dr. Ken Chien demonstrated in his report to BMSTC his proposal to build Beijing-California Molecular Medical Center in joint efforts of Peking University Cardiovascular Research Institute and University of California Molecular Medical Research Institute. Dr. Ken Chien elaborated the purpose and basis for building the center and briefed his intention and needs for the establishment of the medical center. He believes it is the best time to establish the medical center as Beijing has incredibly powerful technical reserve in terms of its scientific researchers and specialized personnel in cardiovascular research. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China has a mind to prepare and establish such a national institute as similar to NIH, which needs a variety of specialized medical research institutes available as the support system for Beijing-California Molecular Medical Center. In this sense, the medical center bears far-reaching influences on China’s society.
